How to verify a claimed award
Claims such as Nobel nominee or award winning are easy to make and sometimes wrong. The reliable test is the awarding body's own list of winners, read for the exact prize, year and name.
- Start with the awarding body's official winners list, for example the Pulitzer Prizes' list by category or the Nobel Prize organisation's yearly prize pages.1,2
- Check the exact name of the prize and the honour claimed. Being nominated for a Nobel Prize is not the same as receiving one, and nominations cannot be confirmed for 50 years.3
- Check whether the award was shared. In 2025 each Nobel science prize went to three laureates, and the Fields Medal can go to up to four people at the same Congress.2,4
- Note the year convention. The ACM Turing Award for 2025, for example, was announced in March 2026, so the same honour can be cited with two different years.5
