Nobel Peace Prize: winners and how it is awarded

The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded since 1901 under the will of Alfred Nobel. Unlike the other Nobel Prizes it is decided in Norway, by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and it can be given to organisations.2,1,5

FrequencyAnnual
Prize valueSEK 11.0 million per full Nobel Prize, shared equally or by the committee's division where there are several laureates (as of 2023 (amount set for 2023 on the official prize amounts page))

How the winner is chosen

Nominations are by invitation. The Nobel Prize organisation says thousands of members of academies, university professors, scientists, previous laureates and others are asked to propose candidates, and the deadline for submissions is midnight on 31 January. A Nobel Committee of five to ten members reviews the candidates and consults experts, and the prize-awarding institution then takes a final vote. For peace the selecting body is the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo, which announces the prize at the Norwegian Nobel Institute. The Peace Prize may be awarded to organisations as well as individuals.
